The Best Time to Visit Kyoto Japan 2026

Kyoto garden autumn red leaves seasonal beauty

The honest answer: spring and autumn are the most beautiful seasons in Kyoto — and also the most crowded and expensive. If you want the atmosphere without the chaos, the shoulder seasons are your best bet.

Kyoto has a climate and a crowd pattern that are almost impossible to separate. When the city is at its most visually stunning — cherry blossoms in late March and April, maple leaves in November — it's also at its most overwhelmed with visitors. Understanding this trade-off is the whole game when timing a trip.

Season by Season

Spring — Late March to May

Cherry blossom season (sakura) usually peaks in late March to early April in Kyoto — exact timing varies by a week or two each year. When it arrives, Kyoto is genuinely one of the most beautiful places in the world: the Philosopher's Path lined with pale pink blossoms, temple gardens in full bloom, the whole city under a soft cloud of pink and white.

The trade-off: It is extremely crowded and prices surge. Book accommodation months in advance. The temples are packed by 9am. But the early mornings — arriving at Fushimi Inari or the Arashiyama bamboo grove just after sunrise — are still magical. If you visit during peak sakura, plan every morning around being somewhere before 8am.

Late April and May (after the blossoms) are excellent: fresh green, warm but not hot, and noticeably fewer visitors than peak sakura.

Summer — June to August

June brings rainy season — misty, atmospheric, but genuinely wet. Not the most practical time to visit. July and August are hot and humid — Kyoto sits in a valley which traps the heat, and mid-summer days regularly hit 35°C+. That said, summer has its own beauty: lush green temple gardens, evening festivals, and far fewer Western tourists (the heat deters them).

Our take: Summer is workable but demanding. Start earlier, stop earlier, and use the heat as a reason to slow down over good food and air-conditioned tea rooms.

Autumn — October to November

Autumn is many people's favourite season in Kyoto — and for good reason. The maple leaves (koyo) turn red and gold across the temple gardens in November, creating scenes that rival spring. Kinkaku-ji's golden pavilion against autumn maples, Tenryu-ji's garden in full colour, the Philosopher's Path in late light — it's stunning.

The trade-off: November is the second most crowded month after cherry blossom season. Book everything early. The same early-morning strategy applies.

October is the sweet spot — cooler than summer, autumn colour beginning, crowds lower than November. One of the best months to visit Japan overall.

Winter — December to February

Winter is Kyoto's quiet season. Crowds are thin, accommodation prices drop, and on the rare days when snow falls on the temple rooftops, the city is breathtaking. Kinkaku-ji in snow is a classic Kyoto image for a reason.

The trade-off: It's cold (0–10°C in January), some gardens are less impressive without foliage, and a few attractions reduce their hours. But the slower pace and empty temples are genuinely refreshing — you get the Kyoto atmosphere without the crowds.

Early December (before Christmas) is a strong option: autumn colour still lingers, crowds are lower than November, and the weather is cool but manageable.

When We Visited

We visited Kyoto as part of our month-long Japan trip, arriving from Kobe by train. The city delivered exactly what we hoped for — early mornings at Fushimi Inari and the bamboo grove were among the best experiences of our entire trip. The key for us was treating every morning as a race against the crowds: if we were at the gates before 7:30am, Kyoto was extraordinary. After 10am, it was busy.

Our Recommendation

If you have flexibility:

Whatever time you go, the early morning strategy matters more than the season. A quiet Kyoto morning in any month beats a crowded one in peak cherry blossom season.

FAQ

When is cherry blossom season in Kyoto?

Usually late March to early April — the exact peak shifts by a week or two each year depending on winter temperatures. Check the Japan Meteorological Corporation's forecast in February for that year's prediction.

What month is best for Kyoto?

October and early May are our top picks for the combination of good weather, manageable crowds, and beautiful scenery. Cherry blossom season and November are more spectacular but significantly more crowded.

Is Kyoto cold in winter?

Yes — January and February average 3–8°C. Pack proper winter layers. The city occasionally gets snow, which is beautiful on the temples. Indoor temple halls and tea rooms make winter surprisingly pleasant.

Is summer too hot for Kyoto?

It's hot and humid — regularly above 35°C in July and August. Manageable if you start early and take breaks during the hottest hours (noon to 3pm). The gardens are lush and green, and crowds are thinner than spring or autumn.
