The Main Areas
Near Kanazawa Station — Best for Convenience
Kanazawa Station is one of Japan's most architecturally striking stations — the enormous wooden Tsuzumi Gate and the glass dome of the Motenashi Dome mark the entrance. Staying near the station gives you the easiest access to the Loop Bus (which connects all main sights), the covered Forus shopping mall inside the station, and straightforward arrivals and departures.
The station area is slightly removed from the historic heart of the city — Kenroku-en and the Higashi Chaya District are a 15–20 minute walk or a short bus ride.
Stay here if: you value convenient transport, you're arriving and departing by Shinkansen, or you want easy access to the morning Loop Bus circuit.
Katamachi & Korinbo — Best for Nightlife and Centrality
The central entertainment and shopping district — restaurants, bars, izakayas, and department stores. Roughly equidistant from the station and the main historic sights. More atmosphere in the evenings than the station area; a good base if you want to walk to Omicho Market in the morning and Higashi Chaya in the afternoon without needing the bus.
Stay here if: you want to be central, you're eating out every night, or you prefer a short walk to most sights.

Hotel Resol Trinity ★★★★
Where we stayed — just €33 per night and genuinely one of the best-value hotels of the Japan trip. Clean (as always in Japan), comfortable, super central, and well-equipped. The budget price does not feel like a budget experience in the way it might elsewhere in the world. Japanese hotel standards at the lower price tiers are consistently excellent, and Resol Trinity is a good example.
Best for: Budget-conscious travellers who don't want to sacrifice quality or location. Anyone staying 2–3 nights who wants to put money toward food and experiences rather than accommodation.
Hotel Forza Kanazawa ★★★★
Well-regarded for its excellent location and spacious rooms — a step up in comfort from Resol Trinity at a slightly higher price point, but still very reasonable by Japanese standards. Consistently well-reviewed. A reliable choice if you want more space without going into boutique hotel territory.
Machiya (Townhouse) Stays
Kanazawa has a small selection of renovated machiya (traditional wooden townhouses) available as guest accommodation — particularly around Higashi Chaya and Nagamachi. Staying in a machiya puts you inside the historic fabric of the city in a way a standard hotel can't. Book through Japanese platforms or Airbnb; availability is limited and they book out months ahead in peak season.
The Kanazawa Loop Bus
Wherever you stay, the Kanazawa Loop Bus makes the city accessible. A circular route connecting the station with all main sights — Kenroku-en, Higashi Chaya, the 21st Century Museum, Omicho Market — runs every 15–20 minutes. Get the day pass (¥600) if you plan multiple bus journeys; otherwise pay per ride (¥200).
