Where to Stay for Naoshima 2026: Why We Chose Uno Port Inn

We looked at staying on Naoshima. The accommodation options are limited, often overpriced, and sell out so far in advance that finding availability for your actual travel dates is genuinely difficult. Then we found Uno Port Inn — right by the ferry terminal on the mainland, 20 minutes across the water from Naoshima. Clean, cozy, affordable at around €80–100 per night. And the breakfast bagels were seriously some of the best we had in Japan. That combination — easy ferry access, no island accommodation stress, and a genuinely good breakfast — made it the obvious call. We'd do the same again without hesitation.

The Naoshima Accommodation Problem

Naoshima is a small island with a large reputation. The supply of accommodation has never caught up with the demand that the island's art scene generates, which produces a specific problem:

• The best option — Benesse House hotel, where you sleep inside the art museum — books out many months ahead and is expensive
• Smaller guesthouses and ryokan on the island are limited in number and also book quickly
• What's left at reasonable notice is often overpriced relative to the quality
• Staying on the island adds logistical complexity to every day (last ferry back to the mainland, managing bags, limited restaurants)

The simple solution: stay in Uno, on the mainland, and take the ferry across each morning.

Uno Port Inn ★★★★

Uno Port Inn sits right by the Uno ferry terminal — the departure point for ferries to Naoshima (20 min) and Teshima (35–40 min). The location is the practical advantage: you walk out of the inn, walk to the terminal, and you're on the island before most of the crowds. No early alarm, no ferry anxiety, no complex logistics.

The rooms are clean and comfortable — not fancy, but well-designed and exactly right for a base. At €80–100 per night it represents genuinely good value compared to comparable Naoshima accommodation.

The breakfast: The real standout. The inn's breakfast bagels were seriously some of the best we had in Japan — which is not the kind of sentence you expect to write about a port hotel, but here we are. If you stay here, do not skip breakfast.

The logistics: Staying in Uno made island-hopping completely stress-free. No rushing for the last ferry back, no worrying about bags, no missing the last boat and being stranded on the island. You finish your day on Naoshima or Teshima, take the ferry back at whatever hour works, and return to a comfortable base on the mainland. This is the right way to do the islands.

The Only Reason to Stay on Naoshima

There is one genuine reason to stay on the island rather than in Uno: Benesse House hotel. If you can get a reservation — which requires booking many months ahead and a significant budget — sleeping within the art museum, with early morning access before day visitors arrive and the sea views at dusk, is a different experience. It's the full Naoshima. For everyone else: Uno Port Inn is the smart choice.

Practical Notes for Uno

7-Eleven in Uno: Stock up here before every ferry. Both Naoshima and Teshima have very limited food options, and the 7-Eleven in Uno is the last reliable food stop before the islands. Buy lunch supplies, snacks, and drinks here — this is especially important for Teshima days, where restaurants are almost non-existent.

Getting to Uno: Uno Port is reached by local train from Okayama Station (approximately 30 minutes, JR Uno Line). Okayama is on the Shinkansen network — easy access from Osaka, Kyoto, Hiroshima, or Tokyo.

Ferry timing: The Naoshima ferry from Uno runs frequently (roughly every 30–60 minutes). The Teshima ferry is much less frequent — check the schedule the night before and plan your departure precisely. Missing a Teshima ferry means a 2–3 hour wait, which we learned firsthand.
