Where to Stay in Kobe Japan: Our Top Picks 2026

Kobe Sannomiya city centre

If you're staying in Kobe — rather than day-tripping from Osaka — Sannomiya is the right neighbourhood. It's Kobe's central transport hub, surrounded by restaurants, walking distance from everything. We stayed at remm plus Kobe Sannomiya: right next to the station, panoramic views from the upper floors over the city and harbor, well-designed rooms. One of the better hotel experiences of the Japan trip.

Should You Stay in Kobe or Day-Trip from Osaka?

This is worth addressing directly. Kobe is 30 minutes from Osaka by train — close enough that many Japan itineraries keep Osaka as a base and visit Kobe as a day trip. This works well:

The reasons to stay in Kobe overnight rather than day-tripping:

Either approach works. If you're staying in Osaka for multiple nights, day-trip. If you have flexibility, one Kobe overnight adds something.

Where We Stayed: remm plus Kobe Sannomiya ★★★★

Kobe Sannomiya neighbourhood

Right next to Sannomiya Station — the most convenient possible location for both city exploration and onward travel. The hotel occupies the upper floors of a building, which means city and harbor views from the higher rooms: at night, with Kobe and the bay spread below, the view from our room was one of the better hotel room views of the Japan trip.

The rooms are well-designed — compact in the way that good Japanese hotels make compact work, with everything in the right place and the bathroom properly thought through. The guide's tip is genuinely worth following: "Ask for a high-floor room for the best views at night."

Location: Sannomiya, directly adjacent to the station. Walking distance to Chinatown (10 min), Kitano (15 min uphill), Ikuta Shrine (5 min). Easy tram and metro access to everywhere else.

Best for: Anyone staying in Kobe overnight — the location and views make it the easy choice in Sannomiya.

The Best Area: Sannomiya

Sannomiya is Kobe's equivalent of Osaka's Namba or Kyoto's Kawaramachi — the city's main transport hub and the neighbourhood with the best concentration of restaurants, cafés, and shops. Everything in Kobe is within walking distance of Sannomiya: Chinatown to the west, Kitano hillside to the north, the harbor to the south, Min Min Honten hidden in the alleys between the train lines. The guide's summary is exact: "central, lively, and filled with restaurants, cafés, and shops within minutes."

There's little reason to stay anywhere other than the Sannomiya area unless you specifically want a harbor-adjacent hotel or are looking for a quieter neighbourhood. For a 1–2 night stay focused on eating and sightseeing, Sannomiya is the right base every time.

Practical Notes

Getting to Kobe: From Osaka, the Hankyu Kobe Line or JR Kobe Line both run to Sannomiya in approximately 30 minutes. The Hankyu is slightly faster; both are easy. From Kyoto, change at Osaka or take the Shin-Kobe Shinkansen stop (on the Sanyo Shinkansen).

Cashless: Kobe is cashless-friendly for most hotel and restaurant payments. Keep some yen for Chinatown street stalls.
