What Gyeongju Actually Is
Gyeongju was the capital of the Silla kingdom for nearly 1,000 years, and it's often called the "Museum Without Walls" — ancient tombs, temples, and royal sites are scattered across the town rather than locked behind a single museum's doors. We stayed in Hwangnidan-gil, a hanok-style street lined with cafés and restaurants, with two of the city's biggest sights — Cheomseongdae and Daereungwon — just 5-10 minutes' walk away. Why It's Worth Visiting
The pace here is the opposite of Seoul's. Everything is walkable, low-key, and it feels genuinely historic rather than reconstructed for tourists. Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond, lit up at night, was one of the most beautiful single sights of the whole Korea trip — we'd rank the evening view up there with anything we saw in Seoul or Busan.
The Bulguksa Temple and Seokguram Grotto UNESCO sites, a short tour out of town, add a genuinely important cultural layer that most first-time Korea visitors skip entirely by only doing Seoul and Busan.

The Honest Downside
Gyeongju is small, and if you're looking for nightlife, shopping, or a big-city pace, you won't find it here. It's a place to slow down for a day or two, not a base for a longer stay.

Gyeongju is worth visiting if you:
