Hwangnidan-gil — Our Pick
We stayed at Hanok Stay Dagagam, right on Hwangnidan-gil, a street of traditional hanok buildings converted into cafés, restaurants, and guesthouses. It's genuinely the best base for Gyeongju — everything worth seeing in the town centre is walkable from here, and the street itself is lovely to wander in the evening.
From our hotel, Cheomseongdae (the ancient star observatory) and Daereungwon (the royal tomb park) were both a 5-10 minute walk, easy to explore in the late afternoon after checking in. Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond, lit up beautifully at night, was about 14 minutes on foot — one of our favourite evening walks anywhere on this trip.
Restaurants right on Hwangnidan-gil worth knowing about: Nordic (an icon of the street — expect a queue, arrive early), Godore for makgeolli and Korean food with hanok views at sunset, and Cafe Nerd for an excellent Australian-style brunch in the morning. Why Location Matters More in Gyeongju
Unlike Seoul, where the metro makes almost any base workable, Gyeongju rewards staying centrally. The town's main sights are clustered close together, and a hanok-style stay on Hwangnidan-gil means you're not relying on taxis for every single outing — you can walk to the ancient tombs and observatory before dinner, then wander back through the same street for a nightcap.
