Gyeongju packs an enormous amount of history into a genuinely small, walkable town.
Here's everything worth doing across a day or two.
1. Cheomseongdae + Daereungwon
Both a 5-10 minute walk from Hwangnidan-gil, and easily combined into one late-afternoon stroll after checking in. Cheomseongdae is one of Asia's oldest surviving astronomical observatories, and Daereungwon is a park of royal Silla-era tombs — grass-covered mounds you can walk right up to.
2. Donggung Palace & Wolji Pond at Night
Our favourite single sight in Gyeongju. A 14-minute walk from Hwangnidan-gil, and lit up at night in a way that makes it one of the most beautiful views in the whole town. Don't visit only in daylight — the evening lighting is what makes this special.
3. Bulguksa Temple & Seokguram Grotto
A morning UNESCO tour (we used Tour Ryan) covering Korea's most significant Buddhist temple and grotto sites, with local guiding that adds real historical context. We've written a full review of the tour.
4. Yangdong Village
A living Joseon-era village of over 160 traditional hanoks, about 25 minutes by taxi from Hwangnidan-gil. This is the higher-energy option for an afternoon if you want more walking and exploring — worth arranging a taxi to wait, or using a ride-hailing app for the return trip.
5. National Museum, Woljeonggyo Bridge & Gyochon (Calmer Alternative)
If Yangdong feels like too much after a morning tour, this combination — the National Museum, the reconstructed Woljeonggyo Bridge, and a walk through Gyochon village — is a gentler, mostly on-foot afternoon.

How to Structure Your Time
Day 1 (afternoon arrival): Cheomseongdae + Daereungwon, dinner on Hwangnidan-gil, Donggung Palace at night.
Day 2 (morning): Bulguksa & Seokguram tour, lunch on Hwangnidan-gil, then either Yangdong Village or the calmer Museum/Woljeonggyo/Gyochon route in the afternoon.
