Our favourite beach in Ishigaki and one of the most beautiful beaches we visited in Japan. Crystal-clear water so still and clear you can see every detail of the sandy bottom from five metres above it. White sand so fine it doesn't stick. Complete silence — no beach bar, no sunbed rental, no convenience store, no one.

We spent hours there doing absolutely nothing: swimming, reading, lying on the sand watching the water change colour through the afternoon. The guide's description is exact and honest — "pure bliss."

What to bring: Everything. There are no facilities at Kameiwa — no toilets, no shade structure, no food or drink for sale. Bring snacks, water, reef-safe sunscreen (essential — the coral offshore is excellent and worth protecting), and something to read. That's the whole point.

Getting there: Car is the only practical option — it's in the north, not well-served by buses. Include it in your north coast road trip day.

Verdict: Don't leave Ishigaki without spending a full afternoon here.

Ishigaki's famous sunset beach — west-facing, with an unobstructed view over the Philippine Sea as the sun drops. The sky turns pink and gold in a way that seems almost excessive, and the calm water reflects all of it. Fusaki Resort sits adjacent to the beach and has a sunset bar with drinks and loungers; the beach itself is public and free.

We made Fusaki Beach our ritual: every evening we were on the island, an hour before sunset, cold drink in hand. It never got old. The quality of an Ishigaki sunset is one of those things you have to see to believe and feel slightly foolish trying to describe in advance.

Ishigaki's most photographed view — a calm bay of exceptionally clear turquoise water with small forested islands rising from it. The bay is protected as a nature reserve, which means swimming is not allowed in the main bay area (to protect the black pearl oyster cultivation and the coral). Glass-bottomed boat tours are available for those who want to see the underwater view without diving.

The beach at Kabira is on the bay's edge — beautiful for sitting and watching the water even if you can't swim in it. The surrounding mangrove forest is worth a short walk.

Verdict: Worth seeing on the north coast road trip. Don't go specifically for swimming — go for the view, which is extraordinary.

The North Coast Hidden Beaches ★★★★★

The most honest description: rent a car, drive north, and turn down any coastal road you see. The further north you get, the more the development drops away and the more frequently you encounter small beaches with nobody on them — no names on Google Maps, no facilities, nobody else who bothered to stop. The water is the same extraordinary turquoise as the famous beaches; the silence is complete.

This is the road trip element of any Ishigaki visit that we recommend most enthusiastically. No specific coordinates needed. The discovery is the point.
